Crown and Bridge work

Crowns and bridges are both fixed dental prosthetics. Unlike removable prosthetics such as dentures, which you take out to clean daily, crowns and bridges are cemented permanently onto implants or existing natural teeth. They can only be safely removed by a dentist.

Crowns

If you have a tooth that is broken, chipped, or cracked, a crown can restore the foundations and appearance of this tooth. At her practice, Dr Rammopo custom makes crowns to fit neatly over the natural tooth. Where large decay or fillings have broken a tooth, a crown will strengthen the tooth. Crowns can also help protect a tooth that has already undergone extensive dental work. In addition, they can be used for cosmetic reasons, like to improve appearance, alignment or shape. Dr Rammopo uses ceramic crowns, which are tooth-coloured and can be matched to the colour of your natural teeth.

When do I need a crown?

You can benefit from a crown when you have:

  • A tooth that is damaged or fractured
  • A tooth is weakened by decay
  • A tooth that is severely discoloured
  • A misshapen tooth
  • A dental bridge that needs an anchor

Bridges

When you lose a tooth, and a gap is created, the surrounding teeth can shift and tilt. This can cause dental and oral issues like misaligned biting and gum disease. This is where bridges come in. Bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth and close gaps between surrounding teeth. The term ‘bridge’ is used because the bridge is attached to surrounding teeth to 'bridge' the gap between these teeth. The aim is to restore the natural look and function of the teeth. Dr Rammopo can assist you in choosing the right bridge-type depending on the location, function and aesthetic of the missing tooth.

When do I need a bridge?

You may benefit from bridges if you:

  • Have a missing tooth or teeth that need to be replaced
  • You need an alternative option for dentures
