What is periodontics?

Periodontics is a dental specialty that focuses on inflammatory diseases that destroy the gums and other supporting structures around the teeth. This branch of dentistry deals with the supporting structures located around the teeth, which are known collectively as the periodontium.

As a specialist in Periodontics, Dr Rammopo assists in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of periodontal disease.

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease (gum disease) is caused by a bacterial infection in the gums and bone that supports the teeth. Periodontal disease leads to plaque and bacteria growth underneath the gums. The plaque and bacteria break down the attachment of the tooth to the gum and jaw bone. This results in the formation of a space between the gum and the tooth called a periodontal pocket. If left untreated, periodontal disease can ultimately lead to the loosening and potential loss of teeth.

Do I have periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease may progress painlessly, producing very few obvious signs or symptoms, even in the later stages of the disease. Although the symptoms of periodontal disease may be subtle, the condition is not entirely without warning signs. Some signs and symptoms include:

  • Gums that bleed during and after brushing
  • Gums that are red, swollen or tender
  • Persistent bad breath or taste
  • Receding gums
  • Shifting or loose teeth

Treatment for periodontal disease

The goal of our treatment plan is to thoroughly disinfect and clean the tooth surfaces. Although our treatments are very effective, you still need to adopt a routine of good oral hygiene, manage any health conditions that impact oral health and minimize or stop smoking for the best chance of successful treatment. The treatment of periodontal disease is never once-off and requires lifelong monitoring and regular maintenance sessions to prevent tooth loss and recurrent infections.
